Given a human shape, we would like to detect and separate the arms, the head, the legs, but also the fingers and the toes. However, one has to bear in mind that fingers are still part of the arms. This hierarchy can be very simply expressed with the notions of Persistence and Morse-Smale complexes.

This talk is in between the previous seminar on Persistence and the next (more advanced) talk of Prof. Rami Band (the same day). To motivate our study, we will first focus on the application to get an intuition of the mathematical objects we will be dealing with. Then, having a vague notion of the concepts, we will define and analyse them more formally, to eventually apply them to a different kind of problems, such as quadrangulation.

A last remark: having attended the previous seminar on Persistence is not required as the main results will be reminded.
