RingHopper - the SMM weaknesses we found in billions of devices - a security researcher from Intel An attacker who manages to penetrate the SMM mode can bypass almost any security mechanism, steal confidential information, install malware, and even disable the entire system. In this lecture, security researcher Benny Seltzer from Intel will present a study presented at the international DEFCON conference, we will talk about how they discovered security problems that left billions of devices exposed to danger, about the journey to crack the defenses, to run code in SMM mode, and we will see the successes as well as the unsuccessful attempts along the way. At the end, we will explain how the attack can be carried out with the privileges of an average user by chaining several additional vulnerabilities together.
