Ziv, a research professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Technion, is the first Israeli to win the Medal of Honor - the most prestigious award given by the union and one of the most prestigious in the world of technology.

In 1977, research professor Ziv and Prof. Avraham Lempel of the Faculty of Computer Science published the initial version of the algorithm for waterfall Ziv, and in 1978 the second version. Both versions served as the basis for essential compression technologies including TIFF, PNG, ZIP and GIF and played a major role in PDF (for documents) and MP3 (for music) formats.
