Nadav Adir and Alon Dankenner, graduates of the faculty, presented this week at the Black Hat USA conference in Las Vegas a dramatic achievement in the cybersecurity world: the takeover of Siemens' new controllers, some of the most secure controllers in the world, by breaking their secure communication protocol.
Adir and Dankenner's research was conducted at the Technion under the guidance of Professor Eli Biham and Dr. Sarah Beitan.
The practical significance of this achievement arises from the fact that these controllers are used in a wide range of systems, including critical systems such as aircraft, vehicles, production lines, power plants, gas and oil pipelines, smart homes, traffic lights, and even nuclear reactors.
