Distinguished Prof. Leonard Kleinrock Visits the CS DepartmentDistinguished Professor Leonard Kleinrock visited our faculty on June 15, and gave a lecture in the framework of CS Distinguished Lecture Series. He gave a second lecture in the Department of Electrical Engineering and received an Honorary Doctor of Science from the Technion.

He is known as one of the "Fathers of the Internet". While a graduate student at MIT he developed the mathematical theory of packet networks, the technology underpinning the Internet. This was nearly a decade before the birth of the internet, which occurred in his laboratory in 1969 when his computer at UCLA became the first node of the Internet and transmitted the first ever message on the ARPANET.

Prof. Kleinrock is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a founding member of the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the National Research Council. Among his many honors, Prof. Kleinrock received the 2007 National Medal of Science, the highest honor for achievement in science bestowed by the president of the United States.
