The inauguration meeting of Women@CS, a new initiative for promoting women in Computer Science, Technion, was held earlier this week (October 20, 2013) with the participation of dozens of students (men and women), faculty members and guests from the industry.
The event was opened with greetings by Prof.
Miriam Erez, Israel Prize recipient and Chairman of the Council for Advancement of Women in Science and Technology,
Prof.
Irad Yavneh, dean of the faculty, Prof.
Yossi Gil, a faculty member, and Prof. Keren Cencor-Hillel, faculty member who volunteered to promote the program.
"Fourty years ago the total number of graduates in the department was 20, half of them women. During the following decade, the percentage of women among graduates was about 35. The classes that began last week consist of 30% women. The department has advanced greatly in many parameters over the years, but in this one it remained behind," said Prof. Yavneh in his opening.
Dr.
Yoelle Marek, alumnus of the faculty and VP Research at Yahoo! Labs Israel, gave an inspiring talk on the topic of Search and the highlights of her career.
We invite all students to show your support for this program and join the
Women@CS Facebook group, which will feature updates on activities and upcoming events.
