Blind people face challenges when using mainstream technology that relies heavily on visual feedback. Consider your mobile phone as an example. How would you interact with it without looking at the screen? In my talk, I’ll present the state-of-the-art in access technology and discuss social issues involved in its design. I’ll then discuss several of my research projects, including new methods and studies that explore how blind people can enter text efficiently on mobile devices. This work covers approaches for text entry using on-screen gestures (taps and swipes) and speech for input.
