Cloud computing has become ubiquitous in our lives. We store our Dropbox files and run our Google searches on the cloud. However, the cloud does not only provide storage and compute resources: it also provides significant networking resources that have largely gone unexplored in previous work.

In my talk, I explore using public clouds to accelerate data transfers across the Internet. I aim to quantify the potential of cloudified data delivery and learn how to tap it. To this end, I measure the performance of different data transport strategies through hundreds of thousands of file downloads. I find that even simple strategies can improve file download times by an order of magnitude.

In addition, I also present Virtualized Congestion Control (vCC), a translation layer that can help different cloud tenants coexist in the cloud even though each tenant TCP stack uses a different congestion control with a different degree of aggressiveness.

Bio:
Aran Bergman is a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Electrical Engineering in the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, under the supervision of Professor Isaac Keslassy. Aran worked several years (2005-2012) as a system engineer at Intel (Envara) Israel, and was engaged in developing WiMAX, LTE and WiFi chipsets. His research interests include design optimization and performance evaluation of computer networks and wireless medium access protocols, queueing networks, data center networks and cloud computing. Aran received his B.Sc. (1996, summa cum laude) and M.Sc. (2005, cum laude) in Electrical Engineering from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology.
