Open Access (OA) refers to various forms of research outputs that are openly available online and
are free of many restrictions on access and usage. Open Access publishing has become more and
more prevalent in the last decade. The benefits to the academic community and the general public
are clear: scholarly publications can be easily accessed through popular free search engines, like
Google Scholar. Knowledge is spread more widely and contributes to scientific progress.
However, questions have been raised about the quality of openly published articles, especially in
light of the rise and multiplication of "Predatory Journals", that add unreliable spam articles to the
pool of scientific publications. Other reservations pertain to copyright issues and funding.
The Technion Libraries offer assistance and guidance in distinguishing between reliable and
unreliable open access sources. I will present evaluation tools that will help you make sure you rely
on authentic articles. In addition, I will present a few databases that are relevant to the lab's activity
and contain high- quality publications and reports that cannot be found openly. I will demonstrate
how you can access these restricted sources even when you are off- campus, and how you can use
the Mendeley citation management software to manage and quote your references.
