CS congratulates Prof. Hagit Attiya on receiving the prestigious 2011 Edsger W. Dijkstra Prize in Distributed Computing, together with Amotz Bar-Noy and Danny Dolev, for their paper "Sharing Memory Robustly in Message-Passing Systemswhich" which appeared in the Journal of the ACM 1995. This fundamental paper presents the first asynchronous fault-toleran simulation of shared memory in a message passing system. More details on the research in the attached document.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities for 2011 graded the Technion in the field of computer science in the 15th place in the world for the second time in a row. The ranking, performed by the Institute of Higher Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is based on several excellency factors such as number of faculty and alumni winning Turing award, number of highly cited researchers, number of published papers, and percentage of papers published in top journals.

The traditional programming contest of the Faculty of Computer Science was held for the sixth time on Monday, Judne 20 2011. The winning team included Noa Korner, Omer Tabach, and Tomer Vromen. The seven teams, which attended the contest, were asked to solve as many as possible out of nine programming problems in various fields in Mathematics and Computer Science. The CS Department held its Third Research Day on Tuesday, June 21 2011. An all-time record number of posters (31) were exhibited by excellent M.Sc. and Ph.D. students before multitude of guests from the Technion and the industry. Henry Taub, a great Technion benefactor and Distinguished Chairman of the International Board of Governors, passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2011.
