The SODA 2011 Program Committee awarded Tehcnion CS faculty Dr. Nir Ailon and his coauthor Dr. Edo Liberty (Yahoo! Research, Haifa), the Best Paper Award of the conference, for their paper: "An Almost Optimal Unrestricted Fast Johnson-Lindenstrauss Transform". The award will be announced at the SODA 2011 conference in San Francisco on January 2011. Congratulations!

The government of Israel approved the recommendation of Gidon Saar, the Minister of Education and Chairman of the Council for Higher Education to appoint Professor Hagit Attiya as member of the council of Higher Education. Congratulations!

Itai Dabran, Chief Engineer of The CS Laboratory for Computer Communication and Networking (LCCN), is the new chair of IEEE Comsoc Israel. The communication group of IEEE Israel has now 300 members from the academy and the industry who join hands to promote and spread knowledge and innovation in the field of computer communication.

In the International Mathematical Competition 2010 held in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria the Israeli team won the fourth place (the places were computed as sum of best 3 students, plus average of the entire team). Seven students from Tel Aviv University, Open University and the Technion took part in the team and CS undergraduate student Shahar Papini, who presented the Technion, received the third prize. Congratulations to Shahar Papini!

The Academic Ranking of World Universities for 2010 graded the Technion in the field of computer science in the 15th place in the world. The ranking, performed by the Institute of Higher Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is based on several excellency factors such as number of faculty and alumni winning Turing award, number of highly cited researchers, number of published papers, and percentage of papers published in top journals.

Cisco granted the Excellent Students Prize, to six excellent students, who were selected out of 30 candidates from the Technion, Tel Aviv University and Ben Gurion University, and who study or research computer and internet networks. Moran Feldman, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Computer Science at the Technion won the World Google European and American Doctoral Fellowships. It is the first time that Google decided to grant a fellowship to research students outside the United States and in Israel Feldman was chosen together with a student from the Hebrew University. Two CS Technion teams won first and second place in the finals of Microsoft's ImagineCup Competition. The German Research Institute "Hasso Plattner" established a branch at the Technion, in collaboration with Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Departments. This is the second extension institute located outside Germany and second to the South Africa branch established a year ago. Craig Mundie, chief executive of research and strategy in "Microsoft", visited the Technion on April 13 at and met researchers in computer science, electrical engineering, nano-technology, bio-Physics and Bio-Medicine. Mr. Craig was accompanied by Moshe Lichtman, vice president of "Microsoft" and president of Global R&D in Israel and by Yoram Yaacovi, technology officer and director of Laboratories of Innovation R&D Center in "Microsoft" Israel.

Cisco will award prizes for outstanding students who are studying in the fields of communication, networks and Internet. Awards of NIS 8,000 each will be granted to graduate students and awards of NIS 4,000 each to outstanding undergraduate students.
